Want barnyard animals in the city? Hillsboro wants to talk about it

The City of Hillsboro has scheduled three community meetings to have a discussion about the keeping of livestock, chickens and livestock miniatures such as pygmy goats and miniature horses in the city.

Based upon feedback from these meetings, staff will develop policy options for the City Council's consideration this summer. In addition to what types of animals should be allowed within the city limits, the policy options will also address livability issues like noise, odor, containment and health concerns.

The meetings will be held:

  • Feb. 8 from 7-9 p.m. at Century High School
  • Feb. 11 from 7-9 p.m. at Civic Center
  • Feb. 25 from 7-9 p.m. at Quatama Elementary

Staff from the planning and police departments will be at the meetings to share information and answer questions.

Within the last year, the city has fielded 24 inquires and 38 complaints about various animals within the city limits including chickens, goats, horses and peacocks.

It's Animal Shelter Appreciation Week in Washington County

The Board of County Commissioners proclaimed November 2-8 as "Animal Shelter Appreciation Week" in Washington County.

In 1996, the Humane Society of the United States launched National Animal Shelter Appreciation Week. Communities across the country now designate the first week of November to commemorate the invaluable role shelters play in their communities. Animal shelters, like the Bonnie L. Hays Small Animal Shelter, are important to the quality of life of our community and communities around the nation.

People are often unaware of the importance of the shelter and our animal services to the community. Therefore, declaring the first week of November as "Animal  Shelter Appreciation Week" will help improve that awareness.

It's not often homeless animals win the lottery

On Tuesday, homeless animals in Washington County were lottery winners.

Earlier this year, the Sunset Fred Meyer store in Hillsboro issued a winning lottery ticket. Stores receive a payment from the Oregon Lottery when they have winners. The Sunset Fred Meyer donated $26,000 to the Bonnie L. Hays Small Animal Shelter of Washington County.

“We got the wonderful call from the Sunset Fred Meyer store manager Brad Robbins, telling us he had a surprise for us,” says County Animal Services Manager Deborah Wood.
